The interior of your car should be comfortable
and nice for you to drive around in. As nice as
the interior is, the whole look can be ruined
when the roof interior material is flapping,
peeling or falling down. This is not only
untidy, but it can be a safety hazard by
blocking your view out of the rear window.
How to Replace a Car Roof Interior
The interior cloth portion of a car that hangs
overhead is called a headlining or headliner.
Headlinings are usually crafted from cloth that
matches the rest of the car's interior. Over
time, headlinings can become dirty, worn and
detached from the surface. Once the headlining
becomes damaged from normal wear and tear or
abuse, it can become an eyesore for the car's
interior. In order to rejuvenate the car's
interior, repairing a headliner by replacing it
is necessary and easy to do with the right
tools, materials, and guidance.
How To Repair a Cloth Roof in Cars
Eventually as your car ages you begin to notice
that the headliner of your car's interior is
becoming loose and unglued. It seems that it
happens around eight to ten years after you've
had your car. First, it starts out as a minor
bubble of material hanging from your car's roof.
As you're driving along you may notice it in
your rear-view mirror. Maybe it blocks your
vision for the first time, and that is your
first tip off that you have a headliner problem.
Headliner
Board headliners use a formed heavy cardboard or
fibreglass board that is installed on the
underside of the roof. The board is covered with
lightweight foam-backed fabric that has no
seams. Board headliners are used on almost all
modern cars.
Headliners are designed by car manufacturers to
last many years. Eventually, however, heat and
sun take their toll and the headliner requires
repair or replacement.
Bow Headliners
As it gets old, bow headliner material gets
holes or the thread holding the headliner
together rots out. In most cases, it is
impractical to repair bow headliners - they
usually need to be replaced. Fortunately,
reproductions of some original headliner
materials are still available. We can order some
new bow headliners pre-made to the original
specifications or use reproduction material to
make a new headliners from scratch. Sometimes
windshield, side, and/or rear glass needs to be
removed in order to install the new headliner.
Board Headliners
Commonly the sun destroys the material along
headliner edges or the foam backing on board
headliner material dries out. Either way the
headliner material starts to hang down, looking
ugly and blocking vision. In a few cases the
material can be glued back in place but usually
either the headliner material and/or the
headliner board needs to be replaced.
